Aspen Restaurants - An Insider Secret

As a visitor to Aspen the single most important thing to know about Aspen restaurants is that almost every restaurant offers one or both of the following:

Bar Menu
in the cocktail lounge or bar area which enables you to order a limited number of items off the main menu at a more affordable price.

Discounted Prix Fix Menu
typically a three course - appetizer, entree and desert - dinner for a fixed price and available at specific times in the early evening during peak season or all evening during low season.

If you are an Aspen local this is the "insider" secret to affordable Aspen dining. Living in a tourist mecca, we can not afford to eat out on a regular basis at tourist menu prices (one is typically willing to splurge while on vacation) so we almost always target the bar or prix fix menus - same food, better price.

Our favorite bar menus are at: Olives (970-992-7356) in the St. Regis Hotel, L'Hostaria (970-925-9022), the Bar at the Little Nell, and Pacifica (970-920-9775) for raw bar and seafood. But, virtually all restaurants have bar menus so pick the type of food that fits your mood, select your restaurant and ask to see the bar menu.

Another advantage of a bar menu is that you can often use that as a way to eat somewhere on the spur-of-the-moment without a reservation. This is a real advantage during peak holiday weeks.
